Yet another of my “21st Century music that moved in the right direction” retro music videos. For me, the best and only song of 2002. I don’t know how many rap, hip hop, and teen pop songs I had to endure just to hear this beautiful melody by an accomplished recording artist played once on the radio on a typical day (around here anyway). Eighteen years later and I can say this song is standing the test of time very well.
There is something about the song (and was in 2002) that beckons one to the past and an entirely different American landscape. Maybe it’s the string section that sounds like it is sampling the theme from The Magnificent Seven (1960), maybe it’s Vanessa Carlton’s voice which makes me think of Marilyn Monroe’s. But two of the giants of that landscape, Marilyn and Clark Gable, starred in the same film, neither to live very long beyond the making of it. The “thousand mile” walk in the song also reminded me of another famous “long walk” from my part of the galaxy: Marilyn again in the film Niagara (1953). Thus, we have two super films in one video: The Misfits (1961) and Niagara (1953) … fitting creative editing work I hope for one super song.
