We are such a peculiar people aren’t we? In the way we envy others and the way we get others to envy us. It’s not just our insatiable desire for more or our unending pursuit of being better than others. Our envy ultimately comes from a failure or a refusal to trust in the goodness of God and the joy of his promises.
Envy ultimately comes from the belief that God is withholding something from me, doesn’t care about me, doesn’t know what is best for me, or doesn’t know how to provide for me.
Really it’s the belief that God is not enough. And when God is not enough then envy will have its way with us.
But as we will see in the unfolding story of Joseph, he continued to trust God even when his life fell apart. While his brothers intended evil against Joseph, we see that God was indeed working out all things for his good.
