Dancehall de quebrada is a growing movement in São Paulo, known for huge walls of sound system and for the emergence of producers who are engaged in spreading Jamaican culture and music in the suburbs of the city. The film led by Emcee Lê, one of the main names of the Brazilian dancehall, takes the spectator into an aesthetic and musical journey into the daily routines of the creators and the revellers of the dancehall parties (‘bailes’ as they call them).

For Emcee Lê, his transition from rap to reggae is full of meaning and life discovery: “Through dancehall I got to learn about African history, my origins, I learnt about the diaspora and the importance of the history of black people in the world.”

Dancehall de quebrada is considered by many of its supporters to be an aggregating and democratic movement. Currently, many bars and community spaces open up weekly for parties. Some of them, as is the case of the Baile da 3 Côco, in east São Paulo, receive more than two thousand people per edition. The movement follows the changing mentality of society, respecting social and geographical questions, and producing new music religiously, anywhere and in any way possible.
