One-third of one of rap music’s most legendary trios, Run-DMC, McDaniels caught the hip hop vibe after listening to tracks by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. (If you don’t know about them, we’re gonna speak to someone about revoking your hip hop fan card.)
In 1978, McDaniels taught himself to DJ in the basement of his parents’ home, using turntables and a mixer that he bought with his older brother, Alford, after having a comic book sale in their neighborhood, but that didn’t last long.
His friend Joseph “Run” Simmons acquired his own turntables and mixer, and Jam-Master Jay joined the group. Afterwards, Run encouraged McDaniels to rap rather than DJ. Eventually, McDaniels would adopt the shorter “D.M.C.,” (“Devastating Mic Control”), and the rest is the stuff of legend.
